What is MAKTAB in Hajj?

A Hajj Maktab is a service center or office in Saudi Arabia that helps organize and facilitate the logistics of Hajj pilgrimage for pilgrims, particularly those coming from abroad. These offices assist in various aspects of pilgrimage, such as providing accommodation, transportation, guiding pilgrims, and ensuring that the religious rites are performed correctly. They also offer support with documentation, permits and other administrative tasks necessary for Hajj. The Hajj Maktab plays a crucial role in ensuring a smooth experience for the millions of Muslims who travel to Makkah each year.

Maktabs ensure that these accommodations are properly set up and meet the needs of the assigned group. The tents are usually air-conditioned and equipped with basic amenities to provide comfort during the stay. In Hajj, a Maktab is a living accommodation for pilgrims in the Mina valley of Makkah, Saudi Arabia. Maktabs can offer different levels of service, including air-conditioned tents, private bathrooms, and transportation.

MAKTAB A Category (Zone I):

In the context of Hajj, a “Maktab” refers to a service office that provides logistical support to pilgrims, helping with transportation, accommodation and other services. The term zone I within a Maktab typically refers to a specific area or district within the broader Hajj logistics network. These Zones are often used to organize pilgrims according to their assigned camps or accommodations in locations like Mina, Arfat & Muzdalifah.

Zone I would indicate a specific, primary area that a group of pilgrims is assigned to for various services during their pilgrimage. The exact location and services can vary depending on the Maktab, but it generally designates the closet or most important area for the pilgrims’ convenience & support. A Category Maktab Zone I is near the JAMRAAT Kubri Khalid Mosque, Bridge Malik Khalid.

Facilities in A Maktab (Zone I):

  • Tents: Air conditionedtents made of gypsum board.
  • Beds: Foam mattresses or sofa cum beds that are 1.5 feet wide and 6 feet long.
  • Blankets & Cushions: A single blanket and cushion are provided.
  • Freezer: The camp has a separate freezer. Ice-cream, cold drinks are available 24/7.
  • Food: Luxury buffet food is provided three times a day. International & Asian Food.
  • Bathrooms: Private Bathroom is included in Maktab A category.

MAKTAB B Category (Zone II):

B category Maktab refers to the type of service provided to the pilgrims, often related to the quality and range of services such as transportation, accommodation and assistance during the pilgrimage. Maktab categories are used to distinguish the different levels of services and facilities provided. A “B” Category Maktab typically offers a more basic or economical service compared to higher categories like “A”, which provide more premium services, but still ensures the necessary logistics and assistance for pilgrims during Hajj.

Each Maktab is responsible for a certain group of pilgrims, and they play a key role in organizing the pilgrims stay, guiding them through rituals and ensuring their safety. The classification helps pilgrims choose the level of service they prefer or can afford. A “B” category Maktab in Hajj includes a tent with basic amenities, such as a foam bed, a pillow, a shawl, and basic food. “B” category Maktab Zone II is located near Malik Abdul Aziz & Malik Khalid.

Facilities in B Maktab (Zone II):

  • Tents: Air conditioned tents made of gypsum board.
  • Beds: Foam mattresses or sofa cum beds that are 1.5 feet wide and 6 feet long.
  • Pillow & Shawls: A single pillow and shawl are provided to pilgrims.
  • Freezer: The camp has a separate freezer. Ice-cream, cold drinks are available 24/7.
  • Food:  Buffet food is provided two times a day. Asian Food.

Maktab C & D Category (Zone 4 & 5):

The C & D category Maktabs refer to the classification of Hajj service providers based on the quality of services and facilities they offer to pilgrims, particularly in terms of accommodation, transportation and overall experience.

C Category Maktab:

These are typically considered lower-tier service providers. Pilgrims assigned to C Category Maktabs might have more basic accommodation, possibly with fewer amenities, and may experience more crowded conditions. The level of comfort and convenience could be lower compared to higher categories.

Facilities in C Category (Zone 4):

A C category maktab in Hajj includes basic mattresses on the floor and plastic sheets as partitions. Most other facilities are not provided. Air cooler are provided in the tents. Basic food is included.

D Category Maktab:

This is generally the lowest tier in terms of Hajj service quality. Pilgrims in this category may receive the most basic services, often with the least amount of comfort, more crowded living conditions, and limited facilities.

Facilities in D Category (Zone 5):

The most basic category with beds and carpets on the floor. Most facilities are not provided. Amenities fireproof tents with air coolers, mattresses and pillows and simple food is provided.

In both categories, the pilgrimage is still conducted according to the Islamic rites, but the facilities and services may not be as luxurious or as comfortable as those provided by higher category Maktabs (A & B categories). The categorization helps manage the large number of pilgrims and ensures that group receives an appropriate level of support during Hajj. C & D category Maktab (Zone 4 & 5) are near Kubri Abdul Aziz near Muzdalifah.
